The art of playing
Texas Holdem and many
games similar to it can be described with the old adage that it takes only a few
moments to learn but requires a lifetime to master. This statement is true of
Texas Holdem more so than nearly any other subject. The fine art of playing the
game of Texas Holdem and wagering on the outcome dates back into the centuries,
when sailors and soldiers traveled from port to port and took part in all manner
of available gambling devices as a matter of course, Texas Holdem among them.
The art and history of the uniquely American game is as diverse as the country
that gives it it's namesake, practiced and played over every campfire, barstool
and wagonbed from the Mississippi to the Rio Grande in a day when these areas
were rife with enemy soldiers and militia men.
The playing of the game is simple enough to understand and new players can learn through a process of simple steps. The first step to becoming an expert Texas Holdem player is to conduct a little research into the historical game and it's rules and regulations. Once the player has a complete understanding of the game and feels confident that he can fare reasonably well at playing Texas Holdem, the next logical step is to play online or some suitable easy to access location in very small amounts. Once the online Texas Holdem player is sufficiently skilled at the game, he can then consider live opponents, but only after extensive live practice with the internet version of a live opponent.
Playing against real people is the test of the true Texas Holdem player, as this is where the larger amounts of money are won in real live competition with other real live human beings for real money. But here, as in the online training, the player has to limit the amount that he gambles at Texas Holdem, sticking with smaller amounts and making careful and deliberate bets and tracking the wins and losses so as to best ascertain the effectiveness of the winning strategy the user has employed. Once the player has found and identified a reasonably reliable method of playing Texas Holdem that results in high ratio of wins to losses, he is finally ready to play for larger and larger amounts.
At the point the
Texas Holdem player
becomes convinced that he is ready to play for larger amounts, it is a good idea
to evaluate the player's skill level and reconsider the amounts that the player
chooses to gamble with. Remember the first rule of Texas Holdem is never bet
more than you can afford to lose, as once the gambling habits of the player
begin to affect financial aspects in other areas of his life it is very
difficult to continue winning at gambling. Once the player has reached the skill
level required to win successfully and consistently it is still recommended that
the player continue making small bets in Texas Holdem, as the risk is far less
immediate in these lower value categories.
